Bursaries in Honour of Rose Briscoe

About the Bursary

ONA Local 34 is pleased to offer its members three (3) bursaries of $500.00 each in honour of Rose Briscoe.

Rose Briscoe, an Operating Room RN, was an original founding member of Queensway General Hospital ONA Local 34 in 1973. She served as the first Local President and was widely respected as a strong and dedicated leader in labour relations.

In 1985, Rose became ONA Provincial President. She also served on the Board of Directors for several hospitals and colleges. Rose passed away in August 2021.

Local 34 honours her nursing labour relations legacy by supporting members who wish to further their education in labour relations.

Bursary Details

• Number of Awards: Three (3)
• Value: $500.00 each
• Purpose: To support members pursuing education in labour relations

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Be a member of ONA Local 34 with entitlements
• Provide evidence (e.g., course outline) that the education relates to labour relations
• The education must NOT be sponsored or delivered by ONA or organizations affiliated with ONA
• Explain how the education will advance the goals of the union
• Agree to provide a written report to the Local President at local034@ona.org within 30 days of completing the course
• Explain how the information obtained will be shared with members at the Local and/or Bargaining Unit level

Application Requirements

Applications must include:

1. Proof of ONA Local 34 membership with entitlements
2. Course outline or documentation demonstrating relevance to labour relations
3. A written explanation outlining:
   • How the course supports labour relations education
   • How it advances union goals
   • How the knowledge gained will be shared with members
4. A statement confirming agreement to submit a written report within 30 days of course completion

Submission Deadline

• Applications must be received at local034@ona.org by March 1 of each calendar year.
• If the maximum number of bursaries has not been awarded, applications received after March 1 will be considered.
• Successful applicants will be notified by email within one month of the decision.
