You elect your executives and representatives, who work with ONA staff to improve your working conditions and maintain your rights in the workplace.

They also link you and your colleagues with broader membership and the Board of Directors, bringing forth your concerns and building a strong province-wide network of support. We show up together. We fight for each other and for those who can’t fight for themselves.

Your ONA team includes several key representatives who play an essential role in addressing workplace concerns and ensuring your rights under the collective agreement are respected. Below is an overview of these roles and how they support you:

Bargaining Unit President (BUP): The Bargaining Unit President (BUP) is responsible for leading our local ONA34, advocating for members, and ensuring the collective agreement is enforced. The BUP works closely with the Labour Relations Officer (LRO) to address workplace concerns, meet with the employer on your behalf, support members through disputes and grievances, and acts as the chair of local negotiations. The BUP is a vital resource and support for ONA34 members.

Grievance Chair: The Grievance Chair plays a critical role in ensuring that workplace violations and contract breaches are addressed in a timely manner. The Grievance Chair, working closely with the BUP, gathers information to support grievances, files grievances on behalf of members, and supports members through the grievance process.

Workload Representative: Ensuring safe and manageable workloads is a top priority. The Workload Rep assists members in addressing workload concerns and ensuring that member can meet their CNO standards of practice. The Workload Rep guides members through the workload reporting process and works with members, the employer and ONA to resolve workload- related issues. The Workload Rep also provides education directly to members on the workload forms and filing workload complaints.

Health and Safety Site Representative: Your Health and Safety Site Representative plays a key role in maintaining a safe work environment. The responsibilities of the Health and Safety Site Representative include:

  • Conducting workplace inspections
  • Representing members on the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC)
  • Advocating for a safe work environment, including addressing hazards and concerns related to occupational health and safety laws.

Nursing is a treacherous profession with environmental, physical, and psychological hazards present daily. Your Health and Safety Rep plays a crucial role in addressing occupational hazards and advocating for safe working conditions.
